The team are getting the early prototype of the Agricultural Rover and the RFID Door Lock System ready for the Foundation University Digital Expo, where we showcase the different works and innovation of the different colleges/department.

Night Owl's Presentation for Foundation University Expo

Night Owl presentation was led by Mr. Dolf Andringa and Mr. Carl Simpao who presented the following projects Agricultural Rover , RFID Door Lock System and their future projects at the Foundation University Digital Expo. Click here to view presentation.

Start Up Weekend Dumaguete

We students from Night Owl,Foundation University College of Computer Studies and students from different universities here in Dumaguete City, Philippines participated in an event where speakers from different mentors of the organization share their experiences and wisdom on why we should be an entrepreneur and how this can help people, students and maybe as well the economy grow and develop.

The weekend activity introduced us to pitch in an idea and work towards it for two days with the guidance of the mentors, with some guidelines we should be able to present a rough feasibility study and as well as a prototype. In the presentation there should also be a good business model since we are talking about starting a company.

The Stages of Agricultural Rover

Here are the pictures of the early stages of the Agricultural Rover, at first we didn't necessarily had a name yet so we called it the soil moisture bot where you could see the metal bar that moves up and down with the soil moisture sensor using the materials, components and micro controller from VEX.

After some brainstorming, we thought It'll be a good idea to utilize the 3D Printer we have and make an arm for it, so we used the EEZYbotARM MK2 design, and attached it to the rover. We also decided to change the micro controller since VEX is proprietary and we wanted to use open source resources as much as possible. At this early prototype stage we decided to call it the Agricultural Rover “Chippy”.

Nightowl Members learning Fiber Optics with JayD

Fiber optics works in sending information in a beam of light down a glass or a plastic pipe. It has the same technology in transmitting telephone calls at the speed of light. It's cable is made up of thin strands of glass known as optic fibers. The nightowl members discovered that each strand of it is less than a tenth as thick as a human hair. The team where able to use the Fiber Optic Tool Kit which features a complement of tools and supplies for the fiber optic installation. A standard splicer kit with the feature of its splice protection heater and the core alignment fusion splicer which were also learned by the members from JayD (MIS Consultant). Fiber Optics

Learning what Internet Relay Chat (IRC) with the Nightowl Members

HexChat is an IRC client based on XChat which was introduced by JayD to the members for them to try, play and socialize with other members in a geeky way. It is easy to use and its interface is customizable. It is translated in multiple languages and is fully an open source and is actively developed. The most important thing in HexChat is that it's multi-network with auto-connect and join. The members where able to communicate through it by using their channel which is #nightowl and automatically a person can enter the chat room and converse with the other users also using their unique nicknames for fun. 3D Printing Escapade

Nightowlers where making a physical object that is a three-dimensional digital model using the Ultimaker 2. The printer is created through open-source collaboration and are highly reliable and enjoyed by the members in making cool stuff like the ones seen below. Ultimaker

Night Owl at Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Expo

Night Owl showcased their projects at the DOST Innovation Expo. Lots of audience from the students to the foreign folks visited the Night Owl's booth and chatted with the members and Dolf regarding the projects that was presented. The team took part in presenting their projects to the students and interacting with them regarding the displayed projects.

3D Printing Demonstration at DOST Expo

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) presents “Dumaguete University Town Innovation Expo” in partnership with Robinsons Place, Foundation University and other Universities. It was a two day expo at the Atrium of Robinsons Place Dumaguete. The technology demonstration for 3D Printing took place on the first day of the Expo. The Nightowlers and Nico Cena introduced 3D Printing to the audience, printing a simple three-dimensional chair and discussing the different types of 3D Filament.
