Rationale

Soil Moisture Sensors are commonly applied in agriculture, environmental science, and climate science to measure the water content in soils. Bad irrigation management decreases crop yields and quality, increases the requirement of fertiliser, is costly, wasteful and time consuming. By collecting water content data, irrigation systems can be efficiently managed as the practitioner understands the loss of water from the soil caused by evaporation and plant uptake.

Introduction

Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park is a mountainous natural park of 80km2 in the Cuernos de Negros mountain chain between Dumaguete, Sibulan, Valencia and San Jose. It contains one of the last stretches of primary forest in Negros, and the Philippines. Economical interests and illegal deforestation put pressure on this last stretch of highland tropical forest. To put a halt to the illegal deforestation, the PAMB (protected area management board) of the park wants to more tightly …

Pol Cariño who is part of the Balinsasayao PAMBI is interested in using camera traps to monitor birds and other wildlife in the park. With cheap canon powershot cameras (second hand), a motion sensor and the Canon Hacker's Development Kit, it is possible to make our own camera traps. Others have done this already. See

Introduction

The project “Crash Gear” is an alternative childhood-nostalgia inspired robot wars. Its a simple and fun project to do in our spare time in which we build and customize the autonomous mobile rover to fight with each other, this involves battling amongst algorithms and creative solutions in adding different sensors to give an edge in winning.

After connecting to the computer, we saw continuous compass errors. A first visual inspection looked like the GPS module chip was actually damaged, which also contained the connection to the compass. Sr Dean ordered a new GPS module. It has been replaced now by entheos. Compass errors still occur though, even though the compass is now directly mounted to the board and not through the GPS anymore. The DJI phantom software does give readings for the GPS and compass, but also still gives compass er…

JD has given us a cool drone frame with brushless motors. It doesn't have a flight controller though. For many drone applications creating our own using open source tools would enable us to use it for proof-of-concept testing platform for drone applications. We already have an arduino and an arduino GPS shield, so we could use that as a basis. There are plenty of good articles on making your own controller using arduino (and other tools). See for instance

Introduction

As an island nation, the Philippines is home to over 500 Marine Protected Areas. It is located in the middle of the Coral Triangle, which is the richest marine region in the world, with over 52% of the world's marine species occurring in this area. On land, due to it's many islands, the level of endemic species is also very high. Human pressure on both these areas is high though. The regulation of over-exploitation of these ecosystems (deforestation and over-fishing) is receiving e…

Research has been done to show how light sensors can be used to measure water clarity and the sources of high turbidity. We would like to see if we can make this sensor in a DIY setup as part of our Marine Water Quality Sensors. It would allow continuous measurement of water clarity for use in coastal resource management monitoring.

Steps

* Research wavelengths, attenuation and available sensors
* Write arduino software to measure the wavelengths at different depths
* Design a housing for the …

Introduction

Pacific Business Services in Dumaguete City inquired with Project NightOwl, a technology incubator and hacker space at Foundation University, Dumaguete City, to develop an RFID-based authentication and authorization system to secure access to their office space. Since NightOwl had already started working on this to secure access to the lab space, extending the existing project to matching the requirements or commercial application is the logical next step.
